Why Won’t My Laptop Connect To WiFi? {8 Solutions}

Typically, your laptop should automatically connect to your home or office Wi-Fi so long as you have automated the wireless connection. However, if the laptop doesn’t connect automatically to the usual Wi-Fi, then there must be a problem you need to fix. So, what are you supposed to do when this happens to your laptop?

So, why is my laptop not connecting to Wi-Fi?

There are different reasons why your PC laptop or Mac has problems connecting to a wireless network. Some of the issues include;

  • Airplane mode: Your laptop might be on airplane mode, or you may have turned off your Wi-Fi connection unknowingly. 
  • The router is down: it would be challenging for your laptop to get connected to the Wi-Fi when your router is down. Router problems make it hard to use the wireless network. 
  • Password: maybe your Wi-Fi password has been changed, or you’re entering the wrong password. 
  • Distance: you may be very far from your router’s reach. Remember, Wi-Fi works within a certain radius. Thus, if you’re very far from the router, your Mac or PC Laptop will have challenges connecting to the Wi-Fi. 
  • No internet: Probably the internet service provider has disconnected your Wi-Fi, or there’s a problem with your internet. If there’s no internet, of course, your laptop won’t connect.

How to fix your laptop, so it connects to Wi-Fi

Like other electronic devices, you may not be sure of the real cause of your laptop’s failure to connect to the wireless connection. However, trying multiple solutions will help you identify the problem and fix it. The first step is to restart your Mac or PC Laptop and check if the problem will be solved. If not, try out the following options till your find a solution to your laptop’s wireless connection problem;

1: Ensure the laptop Wi-Fi option is Turned on 

After restarting your laptop and no change, check if your Wi-Fi was accidentally turned off. You may be stressing yourself, thinking your laptop has a defect, only to realize you had turned off the Wi-Fi connection.

On Mac:

If you’re using a Mac, go to your top-left corner and click on the Apple menu, Systems Preferences > Network. When you see Turn Wi-Fi on option, then click on the button. Your Mac should now connect to the wireless internet.

On PC Laptop running on Windows 10:

Check on your bottom right corner and click the internet icon. Ensure the Wi-Fi option is displayed in blue. If not, click on it. Your internet connection will be restored. Besides, confirm if the airplane mode is turned on and turned off. Your machine should now connect to the internet.

2: Restart your Router 

Rebooting the router helps fix connectivity problems as it clears the cache by refreshing the connections. The process of rebooting your router includes disconnecting all cables (including the power cable) then reconnecting them again. Unplugging the cables clears out any static lines that could be affecting your wireless connections. After removing the cables, give about 30-60 seconds, plug the cables back. Give it about two minutes, then connect to the wireless network again.

3: Confirm the Wi-Fi Password 

Many people are used to setting their laptops and Macs to connect automatically to their home or office wireless network any time they’re within the proximity. However, sometimes you may be surprised to realize that your machine is yet to connect to the Wi-Fi. Chances are, it is because the password has been changed or you changed it yourself. Thus, make sure you key in the correct password to continue enjoying the internet. Contact your internet provider to help you with the new password if you’re unsure.

4: Move the laptop closer to the router

Moving closer to your router could be a solution to your laptop’s Wi-Fi connectivity problem. Typically, routers can only serve within a certain radius. If you’re out of that radius, you will not be able to use the wireless network. That means, if you’re far from your usual sitting position when using the internet, it could be wise to move closer to your router or your original sitting area.

Your router may have 2 wireless network frequency bands; one may be labeled 5 GHz and the other 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz offers better coverage, while 5 GHz provides you with faster speeds. If one is not working for your laptop, consider shifting to the other band.

7: Run the troubleshooting software on your laptop

Macs and PCs come with built-in internet troubleshooting software to help you fix any connection problems.

On Mac:

For Mac users, the process is quite different from the Microsoft-powered laptops. Here;

  • Quit all running apps and try to connect to your wireless network.
  • Click the magnifying glass icon on your top-right corner. 
  • Then type wireless diagnosis in your search bar. 
  • Follow the few instructions given there, and the software will analyze your Wi-Fi connection, show the issues, and point out the possible solutions.

On Windows 10 Laptops:

Go to your start menu, click on settings, click on the Network & Internet option and go to the status. You will see the Network troubleshooter option; click on it and follow the few easy steps. The system will analyze your internet, show you the problems detected and suggest possible solutions.

8: Reset the Wireless Network 

Once all the above options have failed to solve your problem. Consider resetting your network. However, ensure you have the Wi-Fi password since you need to reconnect to the network.

On MAC:

  • Go to your Apple menu > Systems Preferences, then network> select Wi-Fi.
  • Click the plus button, then click create and Apply
  • Identify your Wi-Fi on the menu and reconnect again.

On Windows Laptop:

  • Go to the start menu, choose settings > Network & Internet, status, and network reset. 
  • Click on the reset now option, the laptop will remove all available Wi-Fi connections, and now you can try to join your network again.
